Global Sustainability Initiatives

As an outdoor brand centered on creating restorative experience in nature, it’s essential we work to create a healthy and thriving Earth. Our mission statement encourages each of us to have a positive impact in all that we do, and this excerpt from the 2022 catalog highlights our innovative efforts to reduce waste and eliminate fossil fuel reliance.

First and foremost, we believe creating products with a lifelong quality is an essential sustainable act. Beyond that, our team in Snow Peak Japan is leading a number of initiatives centered on reducing impact on the planet and shifting to sustainable approaches in energy and manufacturing.

Renewable energy:

Starting with our global headquarters in Niigata, all Snow Peak offices, business units and directly managed campsites have transitioned to clean energy sources with zero CO2 emissions. Now, Snow Peak is working towards 100% clean energy for raw materials, manufacturing, and personal experiences. Currently, their team is tackling reducing CO2 emissions by having discussions not only internally but also with manufacturing partners. As for future development, our goal is to make recyclable products by using only raw materials. Further, we are working towards clean energy for all our campfields, to create an experience that is both healthy for humans and nature. In addition, we’re holding educational events to deepen our communities’ understanding of electricity and clean energy, raise awareness and contribute to environmental conservation.

Apparel Recycling:

When we make or discard clothes, there is almost always a price to be paid. Apparel manufacturing generates massive amounts of waste and dyes can cause environmental pollution. Since 2018, Snow Peak has made several changes to reduce the impact of our apparel lines.  In 2018, Snow Peak began using the technological capabilities of JEPLAN, INC. to develop products made with recycled fibers refined from polyester extracted from clothing and tents that were no longer needed. In 2019, we joined the Green Down Project, which manages the collection, refinement and reuse of feathers. Most recently, Snow Peak began the Upcycle Cotton Project to create threads made from clothing and textile fragments cast off during manufacturing. While Snow Peak already collected and recycled polyester fabrics, it seemed important to extend these efforts to natural cotton fibers often worn on a daily basis. We partnered with Takihyo Co., Ltd., a textile company that aligned with our concept, and we developed a denim series. We're working towards a circular system whereby scraps discarded during product manufacturing are used in future projects.

Food Waste Reduction:

Food waste is a major problem in many parts of the world. Snow Peak’s restaurant SEPPO, operated in Hakuba-mura, Nagano Prefecture, uses lots of vegetables freshly harvested in Nagano, especially in Hakuba-mura. Restaurant staff often visit the fields to help with harvests while we hear about ingredients, which allows us to provide our diners with innovative and localized dishes.  Vegetable scraps discarded during cooking are sautéed and boiled in water to make court-bouillon, which we use for a variety of dishes – like for pasta or for making Worcestershire sauce, etc. It is very useful because this flavorful soup stock has the skin of onions and outer leaves from greens like cabbage, and it also has nutritional value. After its use, any remains are composted.  The prepared fertilizer is used in fields that are onsite, and the herbs and edible flowers grown there are used at our restaurant. Though this cycle is small, the dishes we serve offer diners a chance to experience a waste-free experience that supports farmers in the region.
