Here at Snow Peak, we often consider ways to reconnect with nature. Life gets busy and stressful, and we all need moments to recenter ourselves. Snow Peak's deepest belief is that spending time outdoors – hiking, camping, picnicking, or gathering by the fire – reorients us to the rhythms of nature and rejuvenates our spirits.
Today, we're taking a slightly different approach to the same destination, exploring the pure and simple pleasures of experiencing nature through harvesting a summer bounty of local berries. Snow Peak USA is based in Portland, Oregon, nestled in the lush Willamette Valley. The summer season brings an abundance of fresh produce of all shapes and sizes. We left the city behind for a berry-picking excursion to beautiful Sauvie Island, located at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. The eight-mile island is known for its beautiful farmland, which attracts visitors year-round.
There's no better way to understand the source of your food than by harvesting it yourself. Embrace the process of carefully plucking each berry from the vine or branch. Resist the urge to rush, and instead, allow yourself to walk slowly through the rows of vegetation. Listen to the sounds around you – the birds, insects, and happy conversations of other pickers. Ground yourself in a moment of appreciation for nature and its sustenance. Gather what you need to make a memorable cobbler – or simply enjoy your berries fresh from the bucket (after a rinse, of course).
Thinking about planning your own u-pick adventure? Do a bit of research to see what's in season near you – as each region offers a different kind of summer bounty. Once you select your local farm, don't forget the following for your berry or produce harvesting excursion:
Water! Store it in your bottle of choice; we recommend the Titanium Aurora Bottle for a lightweight addition to your bag.
Sun Protection – Don't forget to pack a hat and sunscreen, especially if you're headed out during the hottest part of the day.
Bucket (optional) - Some farms may provide buckets for u-pickers but bringing your own isn't a bad idea! Try the Camping Bucket Jumbo or another large container like the Titanium Cook & Save.
After harvesting your goods, make the most of them! Nearly everything can be frozen for extended enjoyment – just remember to prepare your fruit or vegetable properly beforehand. You might also consider canning, jamming, or pickling your goods for a bit more variety.
