How to #RecreateResponsibly
We’re joining forces with the #RecreateResponsibly Coalition to encourage safe and responsible outdoor adventures during the gradual reopening of public lands after COVID-19 closures. Like all of you, we’re eager to enjoy the outdoors. We’re navigating our new environment together, and it’s important that we continue to thoughtfully care for one another and our public lands.
The #RecreateResponsibly Coalition is a newly formed coalition of nonprofits, outdoor businesses, and land managers developing and sharing best practices to protect each other and our natural landscapes. We are a diverse community brought together by our love of the outdoors and a desire to help everyone experience the benefits of nature safely during this public health crisis.
Below are some guidelines for safe, responsible outdoor recreation:
Build an Inclusive Outdoors
Actively contribute to making the outdoors a safe and welcoming space for all identities and abilities.
Know Before You Go
Check to make sure the area you’re planning to visit is open to the public. Make sure you have a back-up plan in case you arrive and find your destination to be overcrowded.
Plan Ahead
Anticipate facility closures and come prepared with food, a face-covering and hand sanitizer. There’s never been a better time to overpack on snacks, water, first aid supplies and your “just in case” items.
Practice Physical Distancing
Adventure with your immediate household and be prepared to cover your nose and mouth when approaching others. Remember to keep your distance from other recreators.
Play It Safe
While we would never advise risky behavior in the outdoors, now is the time for extra caution than normal. Take things slow and enjoy low-risk activities for the time being. First responders and wilderness rescue teams have limited resources. Be safe and smart!
Stay Close to Home
Most sites are only open for day use, and it’s best to enjoy spaces that are close by. Consider it the perfect opportunity to find new outdoor spaces in your own backyard!
Leave No Trace
Now and always, practice Leave No Trace guidelines when enjoying nature. Never leave any trash behind.
